James Baldwin gives a wide-ranging talk about racial conflict in Alabama and Mississippi in 1963.The interviewer wanted to know if this Black unrest could happen in Florida to which Baldwin responds it could happen in Florida or anywhere there’s a large Black population.

Historic Hampton House

More than two dozen oral history videos of Black Miamians talking about their memories of the Hampton House. The Hampton House Motel in Brownsville was once described as the “Jewel of Black Miami,” The Hampton House was one of the upscale facilities available to Black people in Miami during segregation. Muhammad Ali, Martin Luther King Jr. and Sam Cooke were some of the big names who stayed at the hotel.—Florida International University

The Life and Legacy of E.W.F. Stirrup

Ebenezer Woodberry Franklin Stirrup came to Miami from the Bahamas in 1888. He built more than 100 homes in Coconut Grove including his own which still stands today.

Unofficial Mayor of Colored Town (Overtown), Dr. Ira P. Davis

Ira P. Davis was a dentist who opened his office in Overtown. He also lived in Overtown and was a civil rights activist in early Miami. He founded the Greater Miami Negro Service Council, which later turned into the Urban League of Greater Miami.

Mogul, Pioneer, Miami's First Black Millionaire: Dana A. Dorsey'

Haitian Storyteller: Liliane Nérette Louis

Liliane Nérette Louis is a Haitian folk artist specializing in storytelling, cooking, and traditional medicine. She grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti where her mother told her stories in Haitian Creole. As she grew older, Liliane shared these stories with her younger siblings and later with her own children. After settling in Miami in 1977, she began a long career of storytelling presentations
